BREAKDOWN
If possible place vehicle as far to the near side of the road as possible and switch on hazard warning and side lights. Place warning triangle or traffic cones if available 18 meters to rear of vehicle 

Remove passengers to place of safety i.e.: behind barrier on grass verge ect.

If vehicle is causing obstruction to other vehicles dial 999 ask police for a rear guard/fend off making sure you give your exact location and direction of travel.

Accident

  If any injuries call 999 for ambulance then police. + Follow the above

Exchange name address and insurance details with other party.

Take photo's if possible without endangering yourself or other persons this could be vital at later date.

Charges

If the police or the highways agency arrange for your vehicle to be towed of the road by a rotor garage the charge should not exceed £105.  as laid down in statute law 1985.

If your vehicle is taken to the rotor garages premises then storage is extra ask for charges in the presence of a police officer. 

You can arrange your own recovery If your recovery agent can do so in 2 hours on motorways and the disabled vehicle is not causing a danger to other road users or public safety.

In the event that the highways agency or police call out a rotor garage then you  have the option, of taken home at your expense, to your garage at your expense, or to the nearest place of safety i.e.: service area, lay by, car park, side road ect, and await your recovery agent.
